Sfumato

Jupiter and Io, 1532 by Correggio. Oil on canvas, 64 x 29 in. Kunsthistoriches Museum, Vienna.

A smoke like haziness that subtly softens outlines in painting; particularly applied to the painting of Leonardo and Correggio. (Gardner) Note the sfumato particularly above her nose and mouth, a man's face appears as well as under her arm.
